Money or gifts? That’s the big question guests often face when invited to a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Sure, most young people today would love a chunk of cash from beloved friends and relatives to spend on something they’ve been craving—or to put away for college, but many guests prefer giving something more personal and meaningful.
It’s been that way forever. “Not once did I look around a college classroom and think how grateful I was for the cash Bat Mitzvah gifts” that helped pay my way, reminisces Amy Budish. “Decades later, I still wear jewelry that I received as gifts, and think about the special relative or family friend who gave it to me.”
Jessica Jade Benoit, will never forget her favorite present: “I received a bouquet of a dozen red roses with a hundred dollar bill curled into one of the flowers. It was signed ‘from a secret admirer.’ To this day I still don’t know who sent it, but it made
quite an impression on a 13-year-old girl!”
When Danielle Schlass Saliman had her Bat Mitzvah in the ’80s, she received every color Swatch watch imaginable. These days, the hot timepiece is a mechanical skeleton watch that enables you to see all the moving parts through its clear covering.
Speaking of time, a sensational way to spend some precious moments with the B’nai Mitzvah, is to score tickets so the two of you can see a show, concert or sporting event together. If the teen has another passion, get him or her a gift certificate for hobby supplies. The best gifts come from knowing something about the person you are giving them to.
“In my day, the standard was always a personalized Cross pen,” says Lori Yaspan, Temple Sinai of Roslyn’s gift shop manager. “Nowadays, most kids want money, or gift certificates for electronics.” She believes, “the more personal a gift, the better.” Popular presents from the shop include B’nai Mitzvah photo and memory albums, picture frames and framed art, jewelry, tallit clips and mezuzahs. “We also carry small Torah scrolls in acrylic boxes that can be rolled to the B’nai Mitzvah’s portion, yads (Torah pointers), shadowbox frames to display the invitation and tallit.”
Still baffled by what to give? Mitzvah Market has unearthed lots of unique items in various price ranges. Here are some suggestions:
JEWELRY
When my own daughter, Hallie, was born 14 years ago, we commemorated the occasion with a gorgeous Joan Michlin necklace of assorted geometric shapes (joanmichlin.com), which has become my signature piece. As a Bat Mitzvah gift, it seemed fitting to have earrings in two of the shapes made for my daughter. The jewelry makes us feel more connected. One of Hallie’s best friends, Talia Rosen, had a similar experience. “My favorite gift was a necklace my great aunt gave me that looks almost exactly like the one my mom wears everyday,” she says.

Jewelry and technology converge with Ringly (ringly.com), making it the prefect gift for the girl who can’t be without her cell phone. Ringly.com rings connect to an iPhone or Android via Bluetooth using the corresponding app, and buzz for incoming texts, calls, emails, calendar reminders or app notifications. Set in 18-karat gold plating with a matte finish, the ring features a rectangular-cut, semiprecious or precious stone in black onyx, pink sapphire, rainbow moonstone or emerald ($195.)

Patricia Locke asymmetrical geometric Multicolor Austrian Crystal Pewter Hamsa Necklace in rich jewel tones blends exquisite contemporary design with heirloom overtones ($195, Hamakor Gallery, jewishsource.com)

This sterling silver, cubic zirconium Two-in-One Star of David necklace can be worn as a Jewish star or opened into a whimsical zigzag butterfly design ($57; save $5 by joining their email list, traditionsjewishgifts.com)
JUDAICA
“When a niece or nephew is having a B’nai Mitzvah, my gift of choice is either a Torah pointer that they can use up on the
bima, or haftorah portion bookends,” says renowned Judaica artist Gary Rosenthal (collectgaryrosenthal.com). “The B’nai
Mitzvah usually thinks it’s really cool that their portion is silkscreened on a bookend.”
Adorn the Bar or Bat Mitzvah child’s bedroom door with an ornate mezuzah handmade by Israeli born New York artist Michal Golan (michalgolan.com), whose pieces combine an antique look with a modern fashion sensibility—or frame it until
they’re ready to hang it outside their first apartment.

Sculpted from brass, copper, steel and glass, Bar/Bat Mitzvah Bookends by Gary Rosenthal display a boy or girl holding a scroll on one side and your choice of a haftorah portion on the other ($120; can be personalized with a brass plate containing two lines of text for an additional $20).

These mixed-media Yads by Gary Rosenthal, available in cranberry, pink, turquoise and blue, add a creative touch to rehearsals and the big day ($100 including a yad stand; can be personalized with a brass plate containing two lines of text for an additional $20).

This large Star of David Mezuzah by Michal Golan is handmade from brass, sterling silver and Swarovski crystals ($105). It also comes in a small pink version crafted from brass, electroplated with 24K gold and decorated with enamel, Swarovski crystals and opal ($100).
PERSONALIZED
“The best present is a gift from the heart,” says Carol Konigsberg. “On my daughter Jamie’s big day, she received so many handmade gifts from friends. They included collaged stools, benches and mirrors. Jamie’s friend Alex brought an actual
cocktail table that was smothered with photos and her other best friend plastered a mannequin in pictures. It was truly amazing!”
Fine jewelry designer Annie Fensterstock’s niece had her Bat Mitzvah this year, “which meant I got to make the gifts for all of her friends!” Lucky for the rest of us, she created a reasonably priced Mitzvah line (anniefensterstock.com). (Pieces from her regular collection, which blend a mastery of ancient goldsmithing with dynamic contemporary design, can cost in the neighborhood of $10,000.) Since each Mitzvah creation is handmade, pendants can be designed with an initial or a name.

The “Zoe” Necklace from Annie Fensterstock is sterling silver and available with an oxidized background, as shown, or in bright silver ($250 to $300 depending on the number of characters, up to eight).
Protect your favorite Bar/Bat Mitzvah child’s Android, iPhone or iPad from dust and scratches while adding color and individuality with a Collage Devise Case. Design it yourself with up to 30 pictures or give the teen a gift card so he or
she can create it themselves (from $39.99, collage.com).
A perfect extra gift for a girl to give her friend: customized Glitter Nail Polish. Design and name a color for your BFF and pair it with a check or an IOU for a mani-pedi date ($10-$15, starrily.com).
GIVEBACK
Some kids get caught up in the party and forget what the Mitzvah is really about. To remind them, mark this special simcha with these meaningful gifts:
After hearing an injured Israeli soldier’s story, designer Orna Simkhai was inspired to create Shema necklaces and donate a portion of the profits to soldiers and other worthy social causes that help make a difference in people’s lives.

The first verse of the Shema can be worn on a necklace with the Shema-Or Stainless Steel Uri-Ya.
His/Hers pendant ($50, shema-or.com).
Link the B’nai Mitzvah to a child who perished in the Holocaust by having the teen’s name, hometown and simcha date, plus the name and home country of a young Shoah victim, inscribed on a glass tile in the Jewish National Fund’s B’nai Mitzvah Remembrance Wall in Jerusalem, and a plaque will be sent to the recipient ($1,800 donation, jnf.org; click JNF Store/B’nai Mitzvah Remembrance Wall).
Create a lifelong link to Israel by having the Bar/Bat Mitzvah child’s name inscribed in the Sefer Bar/Bat Mitzvah book in Jerusalem. The recipient will receive a certificate and a copy of HOMELAND: The Illustrated History of the State of Israel ($54, jnf.org; JNF Store/Occasion Certificates).
ELECTRONICS
Teens love the latest devices—iAnything (apple.com) plus accessories, such as a LifeProof phone case (lifeproof.com), tablet
or laptop case and charging station, cameras including a retro Polaroid (bhphotovideo.com) and cool gadgets from Sharper
Image (sharperimage.com), Brookstone (brookstone.com) and Hammacher Schlemmer (hammacher.com).

Who better to find the latest and greatest for all things Bar Bat Mitzvahs than our own Mitzvah Moms!
We have spotlighted over 200 families and we thought it would be fun to call out some of the “Mom Finds” that you might have missed.
The Klein family of Chappaqua, New York, celebrated daughter Lily’s Bat Mitzvah at Camp Starlight in Starlight, Pennsylvania, on May 31-Jun 1, 2014.
Lily loves camp; particularly Camp Starlight where’s she’s gone for five years. So when it came time for her Bat Mitzvah, it was a natural choice for her to celebrate there. Camp Starlight was transformed into Camp StarLily for the weekend!
As a surprise for her arrival, Lily’s bunk was decorated with lights and a special photo blanket of her and all her camp friends that her Mom Marlo had created for her.

This photo collage blanket was a surprise for Lily! She took it to camp that summer
Mom Marlo created the photo blanket by using Collage.com.

Lindsey’s service, which took place in a room at the Stowe Mountain Lodge, was decorated in a winter wonderland theme with white painted branches and ribbons that looked like snowflakes

In the kids’ lounge, there was sleek white furniture and custom logo’d snowflake pillows by Simon Elliot Events

The bark vase with wild flowers created a simple elegant look

I’m a 7th grader and live in Westchester, NY. I love tennis, soul cycle, fashion, hanging with my friends, and traveling around the world. Camp Vega is my summer home and my favorite place on earth! I founded the company #Kindnessistherealcool for my Mitzvah Project, and invite everyone to visit us on Instagram @kindnessistherealcool and join the movement. I am very excited to celebrate my Bat Mitzvah in March, 2015.
I recently went to my friend Caroline’s Bat Mitzvah. It was a lot of fun! The party colors were purple and blue, and the room was filled with light-up tables in these colors, which looked great.

Great Neck Games provided the games and activities such as an airbrush station (popular choices were trucker hats and drawstring bags), and air hockey, which was a hit with the boys!

They also had a photo booth with a green screen in the background which my friends and I LOVE! We took many photos (and then posted them on Instagram).
At the end of the party, we went to another room for desserts. The theme was “Sweet Caroline’s Bake Shop” and the party planners Michele Feldman and Dinah Batkin designed it to look like a bakery. We got to fill “Sweet Caroline” boxes with our favorite treats (I got doughnuts, munchkin pops, cupcakes, crumb cake, black and white cookies, chocolate chip muffins and cinnamon buns.) They were all DELICIOUS! Now I better hit the gym! 😉

Sarah Merians Photography & Video Company captures some of the most sophisticated and fun Bar and Bat Mitzvahs around and we couldn’t wait to share this enchanting Bat Mitzvah they had the pleasure to photograph.
The Bat Mitzvah girl’s name is Eden so “Garden of Eden” was chosen as the theme that came to life with elaborate flower arrangements, gorgeous table-scapes, amazing details and a few apples to tempt guests.
The venue was The Grove in Cedar Grove, New Jersey.

Eden read from the Torah at an evening Havdalah service at the venue

Red suede flower kippot

Dad Jeff surrounded by his beautiful daughters. Eden’s dress was from Gotham. Older sister Miranda’s dress was from Jacqueline and sister Riley and Daisy’s dresses (the little girls) were custom designed by Mom Lisa

Bat Mitzvah girl Eden and Mom Lisa sharing a nice moment

Eden looked like a princess in her gorgeous pink strapless ball gown with flower embellishments

The pink, green and yellow color palette started with this beautiful topiary which held the escort cards

As guests entered the room they were greeted by Eden flanked by colorful butterflies

Exotic flowers and hanging ivy were part of the decor

The rich floral arrangements in jewel tones really popped on the apple green embroidered linen with raffia place mats

The scents of nature brought indoors with candlelight, moss and orchids that covered the base of the trees

Butterfly menus flew onto each place setting

A tempting apple mixed into the floral arrangements

Lovely linens in pastel colors

The family posed on the dance floor

Butterfly stickers on the dance floor added color and detail to the beautiful ballroom

One of the creative posters taken of Eden during her pre-shoot that hung on the ballroom walls

E Three Productions provided the awesome entertainment for the evening

The sign-in poster

This 5-tiered cake, created by Peace of Cakes, really captured the theme with edible flowers and butterflies that looked real

Eden changed her dress during the party ending the night in a pink and white short dress and posing for pictures by the “Forbidden Fruit Cafe”

A charming send-off for Eden’s guests who picked up candy and snacks for the ride home

Kyra Goldman of Short Hills, New Jersey, celebrated her Bat Mitzvah on November 15, 2014. For her Mitzvah Project she chose two very worthwhile organizations.
Kyra has a passion for fitness, so she decided to raise money for the Lymphoma Research Foundation by holding Cycling for LRF. It was a fun-filled, non-competitive indoor cycling session at Flywheel Sports in Englewood, New Jersey. The Cycling for LRF classes are nationwide and offers survivors, family and friends an opportunity to cycle in honor and memory of those whose lives have been touched by Lymphoma.
For her second Mitzvah Project, Kyra honored a Holocaust survivor by becoming a witness through the Holocaust Council Of Metro West NJ, part of the Jewish Federation.
Pictured L-R: Mom Sherri, Bat Mitzvah girl Kyra , Sister Samantha and Dad Bill. Younger Brother Jake is not pictured as he is nine and was too young to ride but helped out with Kyra’s tunes for the ride!
MM: Can you give us the details of your Mitzvah Projects?
KG: I love fitness so I initiated a spinning class at Flywheel Sports. I was able to make a playlist of the songs that we cycled to and our friends and family came to the class and donated to our cause raising $5,000. I also twinned with a Holocaust survivor named Gina Lanceter. I became a witness and will retell her story to my children and my children’s children. My survivor had the opportunity to celebrate with me on November 15, 2014, and shared my Bat Mitzvah as she never was able to experience this because of the Holocaust.

Kyra during her Bat Mitzvah service

Survivor Gina Lanceter (with the microphone) told her story of strength and courage during Kyra’s service and touched everyone there. In this picture, Gina was thanking the Goldman family for including her, but it was the Goldman family that was truly thankful to have Gina share in this special day

Survivor Gina Lanceter is holding the model of the train window. Gina was in a boxcar on her way to a concentration camp (Majdanek) with her parents. They were able to push the bar on this tiny window and push Gina out while the train was moving!
MM: Why did you decide to take on these particular Mitzvah Projects?
KG: Raising money for Lymphoma was close to my heart as my aunt had suffered with this terrible disease. She went through rigorous chemotherapy and is now thankfully cancer-free. For my second project I am going to Israel soon and I can now honor my survivor who taught me so much about the Holocaust. I was so happy to be able to share my Bat Mitzvah with someone as special as my survivor.
MM: In your own words, what does it mean to you to do a Mitzvah Project for your Bat Mitzvah?
KG: It made me feel great because I was helping others like my Aunt who suffered through this terrible illness. I also loved knowing that I could share my special day with someone who wasn’t able to have a Bat Mitzvah.
MM: If it involves a donation, what are you doing to spreading the word?
KG: We sent out an email to my friends and family to help us with our cycling class.
To find out more about these wonderful organization please click on the links: Lymphoma Research Foundation
and the Holocaust Council Of Metro West NJ.
We thank Kyra, the entire Goldman family and Gina Lanceter for sharing these amazing Mitzvah Projects with our readers.

The Hofferman family celebrated their daughter Carly’s Bat Mitzvah. There was a Havdalah service at Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and afterwards the party moved to the Great American Pub in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
Carly wanted a turquoise and purple decor palette and that’s what she got! Mom Lisa got creative and designed the centerpieces.
Pictured L-R: Dad Ben, Bat Mitzvah girl Carly, Mom Lisa and Brother Danny.
The photographer was Ann Marie Casey Photography and the rest of the vendor directory is listed at the bottom of the spotlight.

The family worked with Addie Litman on the silver glitter invitation with purple border.

Carly read beautifully during her Havdalah service at Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El.

Carly’s turquoise ball gown from Party Girl was beautiful and had crystal embellishment throughout.

She also had some “bling” on her feet with silver glittery sneakers finishing the look

The Great American Pub has a beautiful ballroom with an old world charm. Mom Lisa along with friend Robyn Carp of Crafty Girl infused many special touches. Carly posed outside the Great American Pub

Using a turquoise and purple palette every table had three different centerpieces which were all handmade! Each table had white tablecloths with dark purple overlays and light purple napkins

Centerpieces included purple and turquoise paper pom pom flowers, baby pictures of Carly, colored sand, decorative jeweled ornaments, ribbons and lights in vases of varying heights

“C” for Carly

Special touches included: up lighting in purple and turquoise around the room and throw pillows in purple, turquoise and white on the banquets to give it a “clubby” feel and to tie in all of the colors. – See more at: https://mitzvahmarket.com/?p=122775&preview=true#sthash.KywGffEd.dpuf

Carly, ready to make her entrance, peaked through the ballroom doors. She looked beautiful.

“Here I am!!”

All Around Entertainment provided the music entertainment and delivered the hits on the dance floor. It’s horah time

Carly entertained her guests

Everyone got into the action even brother Danny

Mom Lisa found this vintage trunk on Amazon.com. It looked great and added an additional pop of color in the room

Friend of the family Robyn Carp, “funked it up” with Jewish prayers, pictures and hobbies of of Carly’s

Carly’s brother Danny wrote a special message

In lieu of a candle lighting, Carly lit three candles signifying the past, present and future.
The Hofferman family posed at the candle lighting service

The cake was delicious and Carly took a break from dancing to enjoy it!

The Mitzvah Mavens created a tote bag and personalized hoodie for Carly’s friends. Each guest got a logo’d black bag

Carly’s logo on the hoodie with her colors of turquoise and purple

At the end of the night, a candy bar was rolled out. It had over 12 different types of candy displayed in large glass jars created by Mom and Dad! The candy bags were Chinese food takeout boxes with a Letter “C” stamped on them

There were so many varieties and all of Carly’s guests enjoyed it

“Carly’s Cookies” was the theme of her Mitzvah project. Carly baked, packaged and labeled over 500 chocolate chip cookies for distribution to recipients of food packages through Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Mitzvah Food Project. The Food Project provides nutritious food and basic staples to hundreds of needy local families each week.
Carly also held a toiletry drive – providing essential toiletries to Mitzvah Food Project recipients. She truly enjoyed delivering packages to those in need.
Some advice from Mom Lisa:
“My advice would be organization. I had an expandable file folder that contained everything I needed. I divided it by vendor and every piece of correspondence, contract and note went into their slot in the folder. I had my vendors all secured at least a year in advance and I didn’t leave anything for the last minute. I got to enjoy the last two weeks anticipating the Bat Mitzvah instead of working on the planning.”
The following vendors helped to make Carly’s celebration special. If you give any of them a call, please let them know you read about their services on MitzvahMarket.com.
